TROMBONIST Dennis Rollins is to perform in concert at the Links Hotel, Montrose on Saturday, November 26, and tickets are on sale now.
For 25 years Dennis has played at the forefront of UK jazz, funk and pop as an ‘impossibly’ virtuosic’ sideman to such stars such as Maceo Parker, Courtney Pine, The Brand New Heavies, Blur, Tom Jones and as an award-winning leader in his own right.
A British musician with Jamaican roots, and a top-class jazz/funk pedigree, Rollins’ diverse musical influences are at the heart of his crowd-pleasing compositions which consistently elicit high praise.
A previous winner of the 2006 BBC Jazz ‘Best Band’ Award in 2006, the Parliamentary Jazz ‘Education’ Award; Ronnie Scott’s ‘Best Trombone’ Award and others, his latest project is the Velocity Trio, a brilliant marriage of refined contemporary jazz arrangements with simmering grooves that appeals to multiple generations of jazz, funk and world music fans.
Rollins’ new band also includes Hammond organ virtuoso Ross Stanley and fiery drummer Pedro Segundo and they make their debut on “The11th Gate”, recorded for visionary U.S. label Motéma.
The trombonist is their first British signing and it’s a measure of his talent that he joins artists of the stature of Monty Alexander, Geri Allen, Charnett Moffett, Lynne Arriale, Gregory Porter and many others.
As for the Velocity Trio themselves, their unique trombone-Hammond organ-drums line-up honours the jazz tradition while pushing it forward at the same time.
The ‘electric’ energy of the group also covers a wide area, ranging from atmospheric ethereal melodies from Rollins’ harmonised horn to terra firma straight-ahead jazz and groove. It’s clear that this is one of Rollins’ strongest musical statements yet, all embracing in approach but crystallised into a multi-faceted whole that far outweighs the sum of its parts.
Ticket price in advance is £10.
