One of the many highlights of the new season at Montrose Folk Club will be the appearance on Thursday, August 28 of Rab Noakes and Kathleen MacInnes.
Iconic Scottish folk singer Rab is touring Scotland this autumn in a unique collaboration with Glasgow-based Gaelic singer Kathleen to present a two-handed concert entitled ‘An Evening of Love, Ballads and Murder’.
The show is about storytelling and song. A couple of the songs will have been written by either Rab or Kathleen, whilst others will be traditional and be performed in either English, Scots or Gaelic.
Kathleen and Rab will perform the versions discretely, as well as interweave the variants from each culture.
This will be a thoroughly enjoyable evening of entertainment from two consummate artists from different cultures and different generations.
Rab will take the lead on the English songs, which will include the adultery and murder ballad, ‘Long Black Veil’ and also ‘Not Dark Yet’, the meditation by Bob Dylan on mortality.
Rab will accompany Kathleen on guitar during the Gaelic songs, which will include ‘An Da Fheannaig’, a Gaelic version of the familiar ballad ‘The Twa Corbies’.
Rab is one of Scotland’s great songsmiths. His concerts always represent a thoroughly engaging journey through 40 years of song writing.
In recent years he has been singing better than ever, as well as looking and sounding about half his age, including when he enthralled the Links Hotel audience 18 months ago with a spellbinding solo performance.
Kathleen is a native of South Uist, Outer Hebrides, but now lives in Glasgow. A previous winner of the Gaelic Singer of the Year Award at the Scottish TRAD Music Awards, she is also an actress and television presenter. In 2010 she appeared on the soundtrack to the Ridley Scott film, ‘Robin Hood’. Kathleen was contacted via Facebook and asked to work with the filmmaker behind such huge hits as ‘Blade Runner’ and ‘Thelma & Louise’. Her vocals, inspired by ancient Gaelic chants, feature prominently in Scott’s film.
Everyone is welcome at The Links Hotel for a memorable evening featuring outstanding performers.
