EASSIE, Nevay and Kirkinch Community Council (ENKCA) - the small rural community which raised half a million to rebuild the hall - is bringing Capercaillie’s lead singer, Karen Matheson, to grace the stage of the new hall and headline ENKCA’s Music Festival this Saturday.
Sharing the billing with Karen and Donald Shaw are Sheena Wellington, ‘bothy loon’ Scott Gardiner and instrumentalist, Johnny Kemp.
The popular Tayside based Orwell Ceilidh Band takes over the stage for the evening.
The community that does nothing by half has gone to town on its raffle with first prize of a week in a luxury apartment in Balaia Golf Village in Portugal’s central Algarve.
Other prizes include a bespoke bag by Carole Mungall, hamper of Thistle Soaps, a case of Angus Ales and other attractive prizes.
The festival starts with a school children’s workshop from 10.30 am to 2 pm, with sessions on singing, led by Sheena Wellington, fiddle with Karen Hannah, tin whistle with Helen Forbes and guitar with Neil Paterson.
Sheena said: “I am really excited about Eassie Does It - the line-ups for concert and ceilidh are stunning. Karen Matheson and Donald Shaw are international stars and the Orwell Ceilidh Band is one of the most popular in the business.
“The support acts could all hold centre stage on their own and we have some of the best, most experienced workshop leaders in the business. I can’t wait!”
The concert begins at 3 pm, ably compered by Jim Brown of Fettercairn.
The Orwell Ceilidh kicks off at 7.30.
The musical maelstorm will satisfy most audiences, leave some folk birling and maybe looking for a sheltered seat to sit down and take it all in.
For those who prefer to participate, there is a free jam session, an open session for musicians to meet and play, impromptu, in a relaxed and appreciative atmosphere alongside Jim Broon of Newtyle and Donald Clerk of Meigle, before taking to their feet for the evening’s ceilidh.
