Local musician Callum Mackie is reworking a Leonard Cohan classic for a production by BA (hons) contemporary dance students at Dundee College.
Callum, who is well-known throughout Dundee and Angus, has been working with dance student Bethany Howitt to produce a unique version of ‘Chelsea Hotel #2’.
The track, complete with layers of soundscapes produced by Bethany, will be used for the piece that the student has choreographed for her classmates as part of “21st Century Choreography”
This will be performed at The Space at Kingsway Campus on Thursday and Friday, November 7 and 8.
Dundee-born Bethany’s piece, entitled ‘Helena’, is danced by Chloe McGregor, Alicja Brzezicka and Marion Cronin.
‘Helena’ explores the theme of mutual respect.
A total of 16 students on the degree programme will be performing over the two nights.
Each dancer has not only choreographed a piece in which their classmates will perform, either a solo, duet, or trio but also will dance in a piece created by one of their colleagues.
Due to the numbers involved this means that there are different performances on each night.
As well as incorporating the work of classic artistes such as Leonard Cohen, the students have incorporated a vast variety of rhythms and music including Zap Mama and Jurassic 5.
Tickets for “21st Century Choreography” are free and can be picked up at 7pm – half an hour before curtain up – at The Space.
