Angus Council’s Community Learning and Development Service began running their free adult English (ESOL) classes in Brechin, Arbroath, Forfar and Montrose last week.
The Forfar class runs at Forfar Academy on a Thursday evening from 7 to 9pm.
The class tutors use ESOL methodology – which means that the tutor does not need to know the languages of the students in order to convey key concepts, grammar and vocabulary.
Emphasis is on teaching vocabulary and structures which will help students to better access services; improve their employability and better integrate with the English speaking community. Attendance at the classes also helps to combat social isolation.
The project is now in its fifth year and in that time they have helped literally hundreds of non-English speakers in Angus to improve their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills in English.
Many have achieved SQA qualifications in ESOL and the range of qualifications has increased to include Access 3 in ESOL, along with the current Access 2.
If you are aware of any adults or employees who would benefit from our classes you are welcome to invite them to attend or contact Neil Paterson on 01575 574989
