ANGUS Sports Development Team, in partnership with ScottishAthletics, provided all Angus Secondary Schools with a giant heptathlon for S1 and S2 pupils, which took place at Montrose Sports Centre on January 21 and 28.
The S2 event shaped up in the format of coaching in the morning and competition in the afternoon.
The S2 pupils were coached through each event in the morning by Angus Council Sports Development coaches.
The S1 event consisted of the competition part of the programme.
The S1 event is a transition event for pupils who have taken part in the Fun in Athletics programme at primary school and are in preparation for the S2 Giant Heptathlon.
Each secondary school entered a team of seven girls and seven boys in the S1 and S2 event and the pupils each competed in seven different disciplines - prints, standing long jump, hurdles, shot putt or chest push, bean-bag challenge, standing triple jump or vertical jump and step-up challenge.
Teams rotated around the activities with each child participating in each event. Scoring was based on the overall team score after all seven events had been completed.
Webster’s High SWchool finished ahead of Arbroath high School in the S2 event and both schools will be invited to the Tayside & Fife giant heptathlon regional final, at which they will compete against schools from Dundee, Perth and Fife.
Webster’s High School completed the double when they won the S1 giant heptathlon title. Monifieth High School were runners up in the S1 event.
Angus Council Sports development Officer Laura Baxter presented the trophies to the double title winners Webster’s High School at both of the events.
