During the first week of curling, Kirrie Ladies had three outings. The first was in the Breckenridge Bonspiel which heralds the start of Forfar Ladies Centre competitions.
The Kirrie rink comprising Marnie Ewart, Sandi Buchan, Jenny Arbuckle and Morag Burns, was doing well initially, but losing two fours did not help their cause so they finished with the also rans. Fordoun were the winners this year.
The Mixed Bonspiel brought mixed results for the club. Wilma McGibbon with Gordon Thomson third, Eileen Cramond second and Bill Keillor lead, led her rink to a 5-3 victory against Glamis.
Only single shots were exchanged throughout the game but Wilma was always ahead and went into the last end 4-3 up. By the time she came to play her last stone Glamis were lying three but a superb draw by Wilma gave her another single and the game.
Doug Henderson skipped the other Kirrie rink against Fothringham. With Jessma Lindsay at third, Dave Congrieve second and Isobel Keillor lead, Doug got off to a good start with a single at the first end, only to be countered by a four at the second and a single at the third.
The fourth end saw the Kirrie rink redeem itself with a four so at the half way stage the score was five all. Thereafter Fothringham went ahead with a single but at the sixth end Doug had the chance to draw level again but went for a bold shot, which almost came off,but lost him a three. The game ended 11-6 to Fothringham and they carried off the trophy.
In the Club Opening Bonspiel, four rinks competed. After playing three three-end games the winners were Sandi Buchan, Marlyn Foster, Betty Whytock and Eva Bell who won all three games.
Second were Barbara Sherriff, Isobel Keillor, Katherine Cran and Morag Burns; third were Marnie Ewart, Irene Mackie, Aileen McKenzie and Eileen Cramond.
