Forfar Amateur Swimming Club took part in the third premier league gala of the season recently.

It’s tough in the premier league against the big guns, and this was no exception with Perth, St Thomas, Dundee City Aquatics (DCA) and Kinross all in fine form, with Forfar bringing up the rear.

This didn’t dampen the swimmers’ enthusiasm, however, as every race was fought as a team event with swimmers and supporters each giving their all.

Well done to Rohan Brown for our only win in the 100m backstroke.

Congratulations also on second places to Hannah Murray, Luke Millar, Jack Green, Erin Brown and Ellie McCallum, in their individual swims, and the boys 11 to 12 age group freestyle relay team of Rohan Brown, Calum Kelman, Mathew McSheffrey and Jack Green. All the boys did well and achieved 21 points out of a possible 30.

Hannah McSheffrey and Jaden Green did well in their first gala at this level.

Hannah was part of the girls ten years and under age group team, with Hannah Murray, Morven Whyte, Lauryn Miller and Jade Doig. Jaden joined Ethan Brown, Jack Laird and Nicholas Fletcher in the boys ten and under age group. Nicholas deserves special mention – he is so good at the butterfly he is made to do it twice.

Tough when you are only eight, but he has another year yet at this age group and distance.

Chloe Reilly, Niamh McSheffrey, Becky Laird and Molly Sinclair swam for the girls 11 to 12 age group and are gaining experience at each event.

Becky likes swimming butterfly. She might change her mind when she moves on to the four length swim next year.

Karri Milne, Kirsty Richardson, Erin Brown and Lucy Richardson were the girls 13 to 14 age group swimmers.

Lucy did extremely well to gain a third place in the fast paced freestyle individual swim.

All the girls 11 to 12 age group are now experienced, mature swimmers, and encouraged the younger swimmers throughout the gala.

The senior teams also do their fair share of encouraging.

Ryan Nicoll, Gary Nisbet, Daniel Brodie and the (very) mature Mr Lindsay Bedford formed the boys’ team. It is tough at this level, and the boys did well to put points on the board.

Mr Bedford drew the line at the four length butterfly swim though.

Nicki and Zoe Wilmshurst, Ellie McCallum and Beth Milne swam for the girls 15 years and over age group and were third in both relay events, and were second only to the boys 11 to 12 age group at putting points on the board.

Hannah Murray received the Gala Star award, and Ellie McCallum and Lucy Richardson received achievement certificates. All the boys 11 to 12 age group of Rohan, Matthew, Jack, Calum, Luke and Mac were all given ‘Man of the Meet’ awards for their terrific swims at this level.

All the swimmers battled well against high-level opposition, and the coaches have commented that the support the swimmers give each other has increased as the gala season has gone on. As Zig Ziglar, motivational speaker commented: “Your attitude, not your aptitude will determine your altitude”.

If that is the case, all these swimmers will be flying soon!

Thanks to all involved, especially the mums/dads/helpers who allow the gala to go ahead.
