West End Garage Honda, sponsored the Forfar Centre Ladies’ Annual Open Curling Championship which was held last week.
Teams from Edinburgh and Aberdeen travelled to challenge rinks from local clubs in and around Forfar.
The competition was run using the ‘Schenkel’ system where teams with a similar performance record are pitted against one another. Following three rounds of play, five teams were in with a chance of winning.
Games played in the fourth and final round were closely contested. Jo Fletcher aided by Dorothy Robson, Louise Nicoll and Sheena Carcary went into the last round having recorded three wins but came up against Carolyn Nicoll, Anne Shaw, Lillian Carnegie and Karen Neill who played well to win by a single shot. Two Edinburgh rinks, skipped by Barbara Watt and Norma Taylor, had a tussle before Barbara emerged as winner by three. Judith Carr and her team from Aberdeen played well to record a convincing win over Marnie Ewart’s rink from Broughty Ferry.
So, at close of play three teams were tied on six points. Judith supported by Barbara Oag, Marie McFarlane and Rosemary Morrison were winners because of most ends won; Jo Fletcher’s rink had a higher shots difference and so they claimed the runner-up plate over Carolyn Nicoll’s team.
