Strong start to competition

FORFAR Junior Badminton Club started their annual in-house club competition on Friday night at Forfar Academy’s games hall.

Having missed last year as a result of the games hall floor being relaid the club was keen to hold the competition this season.

The first event was the Under-15 Boys’ Singles and the six competitors were divided into two round robin groups. Group one saw Adam Black, Sean Murphy and Hamza Ahmed battle it out for a place in the final.

Adam and Hamza had a really close tussle with Adam winning 16-14. Adam then went on to lose 12-15 to Sean in the final deciding game Sean beat Hamza 15-6.

Group two comprised Samuel Hill, Josh Forbes and Uthman Ahmed. In the first game Samuel beat Uthman 15-8 but lost to Josh 3-15 in the second game. Josh went on to win the group by beating Uthman 15-7.

In the final, Josh beat Sean 15-7 in a well contested final.

The Under-18 Boys’ Singles had four contestants in a round-robin final. They were Kyle Duguid, Umar Ahmed, Kerr Low and Kieran O,Brien. At the end of the day Kyle emerged as winner with Umar as runner-up.

The Under-14 Girls’ Doubles was a straight final with Katie Stark and Maggie Maxwell taking on Georgie Braithwaite and Elysia Forbes.

The final score was a convincing 21-6 win for Katie and Maggie.

The final event of the night was the Under-15 Boys’ Doubles and this was contested as a round-robin between Samuel Hill and Adam Black, Uthman Ahmed and Josh Forbes and Hamza Ahmed and Sean Murphy. In the first game, Josh and Uthman beat Samuel and Adam 15-7 then Josh and Uthman also beat Sean and Hamza 15-8.

In the final game Hamza and Sean beat Samuel and Adam 15-11 to grab the runners-up spot.

Competition will resume again in two weeks’ time with Under-18 Boys’ Doubles, Under-17 Girls’ Singles, Under-14 Girls’ Singles, Under-14 Boys’ Singles and Doubles and Under-13 Boys’ Singles. If time permits there will be mixed doubles events.
