Strathie shine in baking heat

STEVE Blackie led the way as Strathmore Cricket Club’s first team recorded their first victory of the season at sun-baked lochside on Saturday.

It was wonderful weather and there were some great moments as Strathie got the better of a strong Mannofield team.

The visitors went into bat under clear blue skies and, for a spell, it looked as if it would be a long afternoon for the home bowlers.

Mannofield had 54 runs on the board before the opening wicket fell.

But then Gary Hewitson and Chris Milne turned the tide the home side’s way, getting in amongst the middle order and reducing Mannofield to 118 for five.

A. M. Lewis top scored as the Aberdeenshire outfit made a final total of 162 all out.

Chris Milne picked up four wickets for 30 and Gary Hewitson claimed two scalps for 39.

In reply, Strathie, for once, made a solid start.

Nigel Hazel (26) and Gary Hewitson (19) put on fifty in a steady if unspectacular opening stand, paving the way for big-hitting Steve Blackie.

The growing crowd was treated to an array of sweet hits, nine fours and a six taking Blackie to 62 before he holed out.

But, by then, Strathie were well on their way to victory and, although there were a few stutters before the end, it was good to see young Umar Ahmed coming to the crease and confidently hitting the winning runs with a three and a four.

The following day the second team maintained their fine run with victory at Glendelvine.

The home side were all out for 112, with Alan McKay taking three wickets for seven and Andy Sturrock also picking up three wickets for 30.

Mark Stewart top scored with the bat, hitting 45 not out, with Eddie Taylor weighing in with 27 as Strathmore overhauled the Glendelvine total for the loss of just three wickets.

Members of the first team will hope to build on that first victory of 2012 when they head for Meigle this coming Saturday.

The action at lochside sees the second team entertain Cross Keys in a friendly match on Saturday before heading for Brechin to face Guthrie Park in a league game on the Sunday.
