For the first time this season Troon Tornadoes made a visit to Arbroath S.C to face Tayside Musketeers cadets and junior men on Saturday.
The Muskies raced out to a quick 6-0 start. Troon fought their way back into the game and the quarter finished 13-10.
An opportunity presented itself for the Musketeers to push ahead in the second quarter. The team got into good positions around the basket to score but struggled to hit the shots. Shots began to drop and this was a team effort with seven different scorers in the quarter. The score reflected this, going into the half with the Muskies leading 23-31.
Troon came out all guns blazing in the third quarter, narrowing the gap to within two points. The Muskies stayed calm and controlled the game keeping a narrow lead going into the fourth quarter 40-43.
Going into the last quarter they knew they would have to play tough and round the game out. Defence proved the difference with the Muskies playing excellent defence in the last few minutes, along with hitting some big shots to round the game out. The junior game started slow with the Muskies struggling to cope with the pressure defence played by Troon. The Muskies ran a trapping defence of their own which led to guards Sim and Spink causing turnovers and scoring easy baskets. Muskies forwards Myers and Patullo also had success on the offensive glass; the quarter finished 14-14.
The second quarter saw the Muskies offence start to flow and fantastic ball movement stretched the Troon defence. The trapping defence by the Muskies also forced the Troon side into tough shots and defensive rebounding led to fast break opportunities. The half ended with a buzzer beating 3 point shot by guard Lewis Esplin. The half ended 42-25. In the second half the Muskies changed to their zone offence. Forward Michael Taylor had his best quarter of the season scoring inside and using his mid range jump shot. Spink hit from three point range and Sim showed fantastic ball handling skills to slice open the Troon defence. The 3rd quarter ended 61-32 The fourth quarter saw the Muskies give their younger players Stewart and Laing some valuable experience by grabbing rebounds and getting on the scoresheet.
