A schoolgirl from Letham is riding the wave of sailing success.

High School of Dundee F2 (S2) pupil Anna Sturrock recently overcame two metre waves and ripping tides to be crowned first lady and eighth overall at the Irish Topper Nationals in County Waterford.

The 13-year-old had already overcome stiff competition to qualify for the squad of nine U15s who represented the British Sailing Team at the event.

Anna said: “I was delighted to be picked for the team. I had an awesome time in Ireland with epic sailing conditions and the people couldn’t have been friendlier.”

Her success in Waterford was just the latest in a series of outstanding nautical achievements for the Royal Tay Yacht Club cadet who is also a member of Forfar and Loch Tummel Sailing Clubs.

In recent times, Anna has performed strongly in the Scottish Topper Travelers series - a sequence of weekend events with six races at each venue – winning at Annandale and taking second place in the Helensburgh leg.

She also won a race at the UK Topper Winter Championships in Weymouth, finishing as third girl and eighth out of 148, and picked up the medal for second place in the Topper fleet at the Scottish schools sailing competition, The Brown Cup, at Loch Earn Sailing Club.

In July she was fifth out of 130 and third girl at a UK National Series event at Derwent and top cadet in the handicap fleet - racing against bigger boats and adults - at the popular Tummel Week event near Pitlochry.

Arnna has competed as a member of the UK Junior Topper National Squad and The Scottish Elite squad and recently finished training with the Scottish Topper Development Team.
