Gordonians far too strong for Strathie

INJURY-HIT Strathmore Cricket Club continues to struggle to get the new season up and running.

Two games into the new campaign and the first team has recorded two defeats. The latest came at home on Saturday past.

The weather, for a change, remained dry, but it was on the cool side as the visitors from up north, Gordonians, took first lease of the wicket.

And, despite a couple of early scares they went on to post a decent total of 210 for six, leaving Strathie with it all to do.

The match started promisingly for the hosts, with Saim taking an early wicket, and then Gordonians being reduced to 58 for three.

But it then went pear-shaped, with the bowling and fielding rather rusty to say the least.

This enabled the visitors to dig in and gradually build a total for their bowlers to defend.

M. Bhandari hit 65 not out and he was helped along the way by J. Cowell, who scored 39.

Graham Hewitson was the best of the home bowlers with two for 27.

It was always going to be an uphill task for Strathmore to get anywhere near Gordonians total, and their cause was not helped by a disastrous start.

Gary Hewitson went first ball, and his replacement, Norman Milton, only lasted two deliveries before he was heading back to the pavilion, the score nil for two after three balls! The pressure on the batsmen continued, Steve Blackie, Chris Milne and Mike Gourlay all back inside in quick-time, as the innings crashed to 22 for five.

Grant McLaren, despite suffering an injury early doors in the field, soldiered on for 17 before he too succumbed to the bowling of Gordonians.

It wasn’t long before the game was over, as Strathie were bundled out for 54, J. Cowell taking four wickets for 18 runs.

Fingers are crossed that some of the injury problems will clear up and Strathie will have a stronger side to travel to Doocot Park with this coming Saturday.

That game will be followed on the Monday by a home match against Dundee High School FP in the Three Counties Cup.

Meanwhile, on Sunday, the second team will be in action at Rossie Priory.
