Fifth place for Forfar swimmers

Forfar Amateur Swimming Club (FASC) participated in the fourth Premier League gala of the season at Arbroath pool recently.

This was a Forfar home gala but there were a significant number of swimmers missing due to clashing sporting events and therefore the club missed out on a number of races - particularly the relays.

Forfar were placed fifth, with the Dundee City Aquatics first team in front with 188 points, St Thomas in second, Kinross first team third and Menziehill and Whitehall in fourth.

With only one gala to go, Forfar are one point overall ahead of Menziehill and Whitehall. FASC therefore need to beat them at the last gala on September 24 at Olympia in order to stay in the Premier League.

If Forfar lose they will have the same gala points but all the points from all the races will be added up and the team will miss out.

It is therefore vital that all swimmers are available for the last gala and everyone works hard and trains regularly until then.

This should not detract from the efforts of the swimmers at this gala who all worked hard in their individual and relay events. Well done to all of them!

Becky Wilmshurst, Becky Laird and Jade Doig were the 10 and under girls representatives and all swam well, particularly Becky Laird who was first in her freestyle event. For the 10 and under boys, Rohan Brown, Calum Kelman and Rohan Brown all swam well with first and second places achieved.

Erin Brown, Chloe Reilly and Molly Sinclair participated for the 11/12 girls, Erin swimming twice in the backcrawl and butterfly races. Ross Brown, Jack Green and Matthew Crighton were the swimmers for the 11/12 boys, all posing good times.

The 13/14 girls had a full complement of swimmers with Zoe Wilmshurst, Ellie McCallum, Beth Milne and Lucy Richardson swimming the medley relay. Anna Brodie replaced Lucy for the freestyle relay and a second place was achieved. Beth swam the individual backstroke to get a hard fought first place, Ellie the breaststroke, Lucy the butterfly and Anna the freestyle.

The 15 and over girls and boys also had a full complement of swimmers. Holly Richardson, Roslynn McKenzie, Sarah Niblock and Nicki Wilmshurst swam well against some stiff opposition with Holly swimming the backstroke, Roslynn the breaststroke, Sarah the butterfly and Nicki the freestyle. Ryan Nicoll, Glen Milne, Mike Mackenzie and John McKay were on the ball for the 15 and over boys achieving a fantastic 20 out of a possible 30 points, a great achievement at this level.

Calum Kelman was the Man of the Meet and Becky Laird was Gala Star. Brother and sister team mates Erin and Rohan Brown both won Outstanding Achievement Awards. Thanks to Andrea who organised everything so well as gala Convener, to Mike Milne, Gary and Claire who helped with the swimmers, to Neil, Wendy Milne and Hugh Mackenzie who were technical officials and to Karen Kelman and Lynne Reilly who helped at the door.
