Fife win for Strathie 16s

Strathmore Under-16s travelled to Fife on Sunday for a friendly against Kirkcaldy.

Although the Sharks started brightly it was the home side that took the lead with an opportunist try.

Strathie fought back well with the backline starting to find space out wide, good handling saw two tries in the corner from the flying winger Darren Bell with Murray Mitchell adding one of the touchline conversions.

The abrasive Jonny Blackie scored a further try in the first half from a quick penalty, Mitchell add the extra points. Kirkcaldy responded with a try just before half-time.

The second half saw the Fifers pull back a converted try. Strathie upped the work rate and this started to give them the upper hand, again great work by the Strathie pack gave the backs the room to carve through the Kirkcaldy backs and set up a hat trick for the powerful Bell.

Strathie pulled further ahead in the 50th minute when centre Mike Baldie powered his way over the line after a great team effort, Mitchell added the two conversions.

Kirkcaldy never gave up though and continued to battle away and this resulted in another converted try with a couple of minutes left on the clock.

Strathie’s confidence was still high with ball in hand and this set up scrum half Blackie for his second try of the game.

This was a very good performance by the whole team, the forwards winning good ball at set piece and in open play, combined with the backs good handling and finding space out wide to score the tries.
