Kirriemuir electrician and rally co-driver Craig Wallace guided his driver Craig McMiken to ninth overall on the recent GWF Merrick Stages.

The stages are the sixth round of the ARR Craib MSA Scottish Rally Championship and they competed in the red Mitsubishi Evo 9.

Based in an around Wigtown in Galloway, the result was all the sweeter as Craig McMiken was the first local driver home in what was a very competitive event.

Although the first stage through Craignell was completed with some caution there was no holding back on stage two at Dallash. Indeed, the times were very respectable and they headed into the first service halt in 15th place overall.

Craig said: “These two stages needed a lot of respect, quite a few crews had issues and there is no point pushing too hard and making unforced errors this early on.”

With little attention required to the car at first service they set off for stages three and four at Glentrool and Arroch Hill respectively.

They had a good run through both, but particularly the 13 miles of Glentrool pushed them well on towards their top 10 target. Service was again straightforward with only a spanner and tyre check required before heading off to the fifth and final stage.

A top 10 finish was in their sights so they made the call and pushed on through the final stage at Auchenlek and, indeed, did emerge from the stage in ninth place overall in a time of 46minutes and 25seconds.

Craig explains: “This is really a cracking event. Machers Car Club are well organised and it is to their credit that the event runs so well.”
