STRATHIE PIPPED BY FINAL BALL BOUNDARY
STRATHMORE Cricket Club suffered the disappointment a final ball defeat in a keenly contested match away to Dundee High School FP on Saturday.
With a depleted team, the visitors could only muster ten players, but the batsmen gave the bowlers something to work with as they amassed a total of 191 in their 45 overs.
Mike Gourlay and Chris Milne provided a solid enough platform with an opening stand of 39, and, after wickets fell in quick succession, it was the partnership of Steve Blackie and Norman Milton that saw Strathie get a decent end total.
Blackie hit a fine 63, which included half a dozen fours and two sixes, Milton chipping in with a fine knock of 42.
D. Milne took three wickets for 26 and L. Milne three for 46.
In reply, Strathie found wickets hard to come by and it took two quick superb catches by Steve Blackie to keep the visitors in with a shout of a result.
Blackie pulled off a great catch to oust opener G. McLaren (20), and bettered it with a real gem, running at full tilt to take the ball over his right shoulder at full stretch to see off the dangerous R. Rennie (41).
But, with K. Ancell (25) and D. Kyles (22) also contributing, Dundee High School FDP were always in with a great shout.
It soon became evident that the game was going all the way to the wire and so it transpired, with the home side claiming the spoils with a big hit off the final ball when only a single was required.
On the Sunday, the second team were no match for Mayfield.
Gary Hewitson hit 48 and there were knocks of 22 from Norman Milton and Mike Gourlay in the end total of 140 for eight.
In reply, S. Barnsley was still at the Lochside crease on 62 as Mayfield overhauled the home total with seven wickets to spare.
This Saturday, the first team action is at lochside, Strathie entertaining Arbroath, with the seconds visiting Brechin on the Sunday.
Meanwhile, Strathmore Cricket Club's Lochside ground has been selected to host the Three Counties Cup Final between Aberdeen Grades and Strathearn on Monday, August 2.
The match is set to commence as soon after 6 pm as possible. A reserve date of Tuesday, August 3 has also been set.
