SPORTS COUNCIL PREPARES TO HONOUR SPORTING STARS
ANGUS Sports Council is calling on the local Angus community to turn out in force and celebrate the sporting stars of Angus as they step into the spotlight for their annual sports awards ceremony.
The Angus Sports Awards 2009 ceremony is taking place at the Reid Hall, Forfar on Tuesday, March 9 from 6.30 pm and tickets are available now.
Angus Sports Council is honouring the commitment, achievements and dedication of individuals and teams involved in sport across Angus during 2009.
Angus Council sports development team, along with Angus Ahead, the area marketing campaign set up to fly the flag for the county at home and abroad, is supporting the Angus Sports Awards 2009.
The roll of honour for the Angus Sports Awards 2009 is as follows:-
Sports Personality of the Year (sponsored by Angus Council), an award that aims to recognise the achievements of a top sports performer in 2009 - Calvin Burnett, cricket; Louise Helyer, modern pentathlon; Simon Needham, archery.
Young Sports Personality of the Year (sponsored by Radio Tay - Cash For Kids), an award that sims to recognise the achievements of a top junior sports performer in 2009 - Michael Downie, athletics; Ericka Barker, karate; Craig Garrigan, ice hockey; Jake Pratt, Ju-Jitsu; Aaron Towns, karate; Stacey Christie, cricket; Kelly Clark, football; Joesph Lipworth, swimming; Robyn Hill, swimming & athletics; Kayleigh Meek, gymnastics; Sarah McKenzie, gymnastics; Lauren Doughty, swimming; James Smith, cycling; Hannah Stewart, archery; Louise Calder, athletics; Jack Garrigan, athletics; Frankie Keenan, archery; Nicola McKenzie, volleyball; Claire Thoms, football; Ally Morrison, swimming; Peter Stewart, swimming.

Service to Sport Award (sponsored by Angus College), an award that sims to recognise someone who has made an outstanding contribution to sport in Angus as administrator, official, coach or helper over a number of years - Caroline Cambell, rugby; Lucy Cuthbert, swimming;Shona Forbes, gymnastics; Eddie Wilmott, swimming; Beth Harrison, swimming; Jenny August, swimming; Heather McCallum, swimming; Elinor Phillips, equestrian; Charlie Lewis, football; Rhona Alston, tennis.
The Angus Sports Awards selection panel will meet to finalise short lists and winners for each award category and these will be announced at the awards ceremony.
All nominees and nominators have been invited to attend the ceremony that is hosted and broadcast by Radio Tay.
Guests will enjoy a three-course meal following the presentations.
Angus Provost Ruth Leslie Melville said: "The Angus Sports Awards are a fantastic opportunity for the whole Angus community to offer congratulations to all of the performers, coaches, administrators, officials, helpers and volunteers who have represented the county so positively in the sporting environment throughout 2009.
