KIRRIE MOTOCROSS RACER DENMARK BOUND

A YOUNG motocross racer from Kirriemuir is heading to Sondenborg in Denmark on Wednesday as part of the Scottish team competing in the 'Honest International Youth Motocross' event.

Fourteen-year-old Robert Smith, who has competed at British and Scottish Championship level since the age of six, sets off for the four day event which is the largest Youth Motocross team event in Europe.

Two days of free practice are followed by a day of qualifying heats and the main racing is held on Sunday.

Riding an 85cc KTM, in full race spec, Robert gives credit to his dad, Jim who builds the bike.

"My dad spends a lot of hours in the garage making sure my bike is in tip top condition every time I go racing.

"Unfortunately, he will not be coming to Denmark. This is the first time I have gone racing without him so I hope the bike stays in one piece!"

Scotland has a strong team this year with 19 riders attending so hopes are high for a good result.

The event is split into two categories - 85cc and 125/250cc.

Robert will compete in the 85cc class.

Accompanied by Andrew Russell who is president of the Scottish Auto Cycle Union, and Stuart Flockhart, a previous winner of the event, the lads are in good hands!

Robert is really excited to be attending as part of the team.

"A lot of the best riders in Europe will be there and it will be an amazing opportunity to compete against them as well as doing my very best for Scotland," he comments.

Robert, the son of Jim and Vicky Smith of Herdhill, Kirriemuir, is a pupil of Webster's High School, having completed his primary school education at Southmuir.
