KIRRIE ATHLETE PERFORMS WITH CREDIT IN HUNGARY

KIRRIEMUIR athlete Louise Helyer finished a creditable 15th in the Modern Pentathlon European Championships staged in Hungary at the weekend.

Louise made a decent start to the women's final in Debrecen, finishing equal 13th after the fencing.

She was the best of the British athletes in the pool, clocking a time of 2:15.51 for the 200 metres freestyle, the seventh fastest of the day.

That was enough to put her sixth overall going into the showjumping.

There was a torrential downpour during the showjumping discipline, making conditions tricky for the riders, and Louise, although going clear, incurred some time penalties.

This meant that she went into the combined run/shoot in fourth place, 32 seconds behind leader Amelie Caze of France.

In the final discipline, the run/shoot, Louise recorded a time of 13:03.52 to finish the competition in 15th spot, behind fellow British athletes Heather Fell (sixth) and Mhairi Spence (eighth), with another british athlete, Katy Livingston, in 20th spot.

The gold medal was won by Amelie Caze of France, with Lena Schoneborn of Germany taking silver and the bronze medal going to Lithuania's Donata Rimsaite.
