INTERNATIONAL CRICKET COMES TO FORFAR

THERE will be an international feel to the cricketing action at the Lochside in Forfar this coming Sunday - when a party of touring Aussies take on a team of Rotarians and friends, put together by Kirriemuir Rotarian Keith Hopkins.

The match is just one of several involving the touring party, who are being hosted by the International Fellowship of Cricket Loving Rotarians (IFCR).

The party of Australian cricketers, spouses and supporters arrived at Heathrow on Tuesday, June 16 and have, so far, journeyed to Bourne in Lincolnshire, then on to Staffordshire (for the IFCR Convention), and are currently in Shropshire, ahead of their arrival in the Kirriemuir area this weekend.

The touring party will be welcomed by Keith Hopkins on the Saturday, and will arrive at Lochside on the Sunday for the cricket challenge match that afternoon.

On Monday, the Australian Rotarians will enjoy a visit to Glamis Castle and RRS Discovery in Dundee, concluding their stay in the area with a casino evening, complete with ceilidh and barbecue, organised by the Rotary Club of Kirriemuir.

The tour then continues via St. Andrews, Uddingston, Edinburgh and Glasgow, before heading south for further cricket matches, ahead of the departure for home on Saturday, July 11.

Looking forward to a weekend of playing host to the Australian cricketing party, Mr Hopkins said it will be the first time the Aussies have been to Strathmore Cricket Club.

"Australia sent a Rotary team to Scotland back in the late 1990s but it rained every day and they haven't been back!" he commented.

"Their ages are from 45 to 70 and they have played from grade cricket down to our "village" cricket.

"They are very enthusiastic and a good batting team, bowling not bad either."
