Cricket Club has change in fortunes

It WAS an exceptionally wet summer amidst tough economic conditions, yet Strathmore Cricket Club turned a 2011 loss into a 2012 profit.

At the club annual general meeting held in the clubhouse on Sunday, president Laurance Knight and outgoing treasurer Walter Lee praised the tremendous efforts of a small but dedicated band of volunteers for helping turn the fortunes of the club around at a time when spare cash was at a premium for many.

The continued support of the club sponsors, generous donations and prudent cost-cutting measures, allied to the fund-raising efforts and voluntary time given by playing and non-playing club members helped return a much healthier balance sheet than has been the case in recent years.

Looking forward to the coming season, the following office-bearers were appointed: president, Laurance Knight; vice-president, Alan McKay; secretary, William Ferguson; treasurer, Alan McKay; match secretary, Mark Stewart; club captain, Gary Hewitson; assistant secretary, Graham Hewitson; assistant treasurer, Ian Cran; house convener, Sandy McIntosh. Committee members - Alan Ducat, Ed Taylor and Steven Blackie.

First team captain, Gary Hewitson; second team captain, Alan McKay.

Although cricket is played between April and September - when weather permits - the clubhouse remains open seven days a week all year, thanks in the main to the voluntary efforts of club members, with an array of fund-raising efforts organised by members.

The festive season is in full-swing down at Lochside, with festive concerts staged by Forfar Pipe Band and Forfar Instrumental Band having been staged in the past week.

Both groups use Strathmore Cricket Club facilities for practice seasons throughout the year, while the clubhouse has also played host to Forfar Dramatic Society productions and the home matches for the Forfar county darts team in the course of the past year.

In the lead up to Christmas, free festive disco nights for members and friends will be staged this coming Friday and Saturday, with trio of young entertainers from Kirriemuir - Aimee, Philip and Jack - contributing to the Saturday evening programme.

In addition, a festive hamper and a £100 voucher are among the prizes in a Christmas draw, while members and friends can support the club by snapping up a £5 ticket for the traditional Hogmanay draw, when, at the final free disco evening of the year, the winner of a £1,000 top prize will be announced.
