BAPTISM OF FIRE FOR CRAIG AND MARK

THE first round of the Hankook MSA Scottish Rally Championship, the Arnold Clark Thistle Snowman Rally, provided Craig Wallace from Kirriemuir and his team mate, Mark McCulloch of Newton Stewart, the first opportunity to try out their recently acquired Subaru Impreza Gp N car in the first forest event of the Scottish Championship season.

Reviewing the event Craig highlighted the challenges the Highland Car Club event provided: "The stages in the far north are excellent and provide a stern challenge, but on Saturday the ice and snow made them even more difficult."

It was certainly a baptism of fire, whilst the first stage ran according to their pre event plan, the second could have ended their event. Craig said: "The ice on Stage Two was severe and as we had decided to run with snow tyres rather than ice tyres we were struggling for grip at times.

"At a slow corner where the ice was wet on the surface from the winter sun we lost grip and had a slight off."

This did little to dampen their enthusiasm or performance, and the remaining stages saw them produce good stage times in comparison to their main competitors.

The remaining stages went well and the service crew, who endured sub zero temperatures all day, had, in the main, only regular work to attend to.

Craig said: "It was a good day out in the new car and although the conditions played a large part in how results panned out we are confident that we can build on the experience and develop our potential with this more demanding car."

Finishing 25th overall was a good result on the day, the off had played its part and kept them out of the top 20 but as Craig said: "That's Motorsport."

The next round of the Hankook MSA Scottish Rally Championship is the Brick & Steel Border Counties Rally on March 20. The event is based in Jedburgh.

Prior to that Craig has the first round of the Fiesta SportTrophy UK to contend in a Ford Fiesta ST with Edinburgh's John Boyd. The first round being the Malcolm Wilson Rally based in Cockermouth, Cumbria on March 6.
