At the Kinross Under 21 Junior Curling Classic, Forfar Young Curlers swept the board to win both the Ladies and Men’s side of the draw.
Lesley Young, Louise Joiner, Hailey Duff and Leyla Al-saffar won two of their three group games, losing to Lauren Baxter (3-9) (Greenacres), winning against Hazel Smith (6-5) (Hamilton), and Rebecca Steven (7-4) (Murrayfield) to qualify for the knockout stages.
In the semi final they were up against a strong Gina Aitkin team (Murrayfield). What a low scoring game: 2-2 after seven ends, the Forfar girls coming home without the hammer needed to steal.
Team Young have one counter in the house, Gina is just short with her last draw and the Forfar girls beat the RCCC Royal Academy Elite Silver Team.
It was Lauren Baxter for a second time in two days in the final, but this time the girls outplayed the opposition, making fewer errors winning 7-4.
Well Done Team Young for a magnificent achievement for two 16 year olds, a 14 year old and Leyla who is not yet a teenager.
In the men’s section, Duncan Menzies came through their group unbeaten, including a win over RCCC Elite Performance squad team Jay McWilliam (Stranraer).
In the quarter finals Team Menzies just edged it 6-5 over Murray Young also of Forfar Young Curlers.
Duncan’s last stone winner was a bit lucky as it bounced off a couple of stones on the way through, but as they say, it still counts.
The semi final was a bit more straight forward with a 5-1 win over Stranraer rink Blair Fraser. In a close final against Bruce Mouat (Murrayfield) it was nip and tuck all the way,
Team Menzies running out winners with Duncan pulling off a great peel weight double takeout to seal the win.
Congratulations go to Duncan Menzies of Forfar Young Curlers who will Skip the Team GB Curling Team at the Winter Youth Olympics at Innsbruck in January 2012.
