Thistle put to the sword by promotion-chasers Gowrie

Kirrie Thistle were taken apart by a strong Blairgowrie side challenging for promotion in their penultimate away fixture on Saturday.

The visitors started well despite fielding a thrown together side and took an early lead through skipper Robbie George.

A whipped free kick by experienced Garry Muckersie was glanced into the back of the net via George, who grabbed his fifth goal of the season, past a static O’Brien.

The hosts fought back immediately forcing a corner which was headed inches wide by Middleton.

The giant centre half was proving to be a handful for the

Kirrie rear guard and tested once more from a free kick. Thistle were awarded another free kick midway through the half; Muckersie again stepped up but could only find the side netting with an audacious attempt aided by the wind.

Veteran Brash was the next to have an effort for the hosts, playing a neat one-two with Bremner before curling a decent effort past the far post.

Blair pulled the game level through Duncan who nodded past Knox from the edge of the six yard box after some neat work on the left.

Again moments later Thistle failed to deal with their ex-man Middleton who was awarded space in the box to head again, forcing a corner via a Knox save.

Again he found space and, this time, the back of the net for 2-1.

Kirrie almost went in level at the half through club legend Ally Scott, returning to help out his beloved side, but his powerful drive flew past the right hand post.

But the home side doubled their lead when their full back was sent through one on one with Knox and neatly clipped past the onrushing keeper.

Thistle started the second half slowly and were almost caught out by Duncan who tested Knox with a low drive before the goalie was blocking an Axworthy effort with his feet.

But the pair linked up on 55 minutes to good effect with Duncan teeing off Axworthy on the 18 yard line for the midfielder to fire home, putting the result beyond all doubt.

Ogg and Welsh linked up well for a deflated Kirrie, with the latter seeing his goalbound drive deflected over as they searched for a goal.

Blair were handed a glorious opportunity by Knox when the keeper failed to clear outside his box and the ball fell to their striker but he missed.
