Sound performance

Ross Campbell was the hat-trick hero for Forfar against Albion Rovers on Saturday with a classy trio of strikes.

But there were also stand out showings throughout the side, notably from Kevin Motion and Barry Sellars, filling in at unfamiliar full-back slots, Forfar’s Faeroese international defender Odmar Faeroe and from youngster Omar Kader.

The former Spartans winger in particular gave the Rovers’ defence a torrid time.

Indeed one could almost feel sympathy when Albion’s Peter Innes was sent off for a second yellow card for yet another mis-timed challenge on Kader. There was nothing malicious about any of the challenges - he simply couldn’t get a tackle in on him.

Kader inflicted further misery on Rovers when he earned a penalty for Forfar’s fourth goal after being hacked down yet again.

All that was missing from Kader’s performance was a goal. But Campbell made sure Forfar grabbed the points himself with his hat-trick.

“I think it was four years ago against East Stirling I got my only other hat-trick,” he revealed.

“To be honest I didn’t realise then it was a ritual to take the match ball. So I made sure I got it this time.

“I was actually getting some stick before the game today from our groundsman Martin Gray about missing a great chance last week when I just snatched at it. But I am more mature now as a player and I don’t let it get to me.

“We were positive coming into today’s game. We do have a few differences in personnel this season and have some great young players from the universities, like Odmar Faeroe and Omar Kader who was also at Heriot Watt before Spartans.

“The gaffer was pleased and was positive about us - though you maybe wouldn’t have thought so if you had heard him shouting at me late on! But you have got to be complimentary when we score four goals.”

Manager Dick Campbell was rightly delighted with his son’s excellent hat-trick and all round performance but also the showing from all of his patchwork side.

“We must have had at least 10 glorious chances in the first and second half,” Campbell said.

“Although we did not take them, we were winning four nil comfortably.

“At half time I told them the only way we would let them back in was by being silly. And we did let them score silly goals. But credit to Albion Rovers, they didn’t give up.

“We were down to 13 players today so I am very happy. I had a very difficult decision to make even in the warm up. Odmar Faeroe wasn’t fit but I just had to play him. I said if we got the third goal I would take him off.

“But we had a lot of excellent performances. I thought Kevin Motion was outstanding filling in for us today. And I have got to praise Ross’s hat trick, he was a handful all day.

“We have got goals in us and we played very well.”
