WEBSTER'S PUPILS' BEST EVER PERFORMANCE AT COUNTY SPORTS
ATHLETIC pupils at Webster's High School have celebrated their best ever performance at the County Sports - where medals were won, records were smashed and a great deal of pride was brought back to the school.
The annual county sports took place at the Caird Park in Dundee earlier this month.
This year's event saw stiff competition between eight Angus schools all competing for the championship.
Webster's High knew it would be difficult to improve on increasingly strong performances from the previous two years' campaigns.
In an attempt to go one step better than last year, competitors went through an extensive training schedule in lessons and at lunchtimes provided by the P.E. department in the build up to the competition.
These sessions were designed to give the pupils the edge when it came to the big day, and also provide valuable practice for the competitors for the annual sports heats.
From the sports heats, not only the boys and girls schools sports champions would be decided but places in the events for the county sports would be contested for.
Despite last year's tremendous achievements, this year was Webster's most successful county sports and medal haul in living memory.
A total of 73 medals were won and school athletic records and county sports records were smashed.
In total, 15 gold, 32 silver and 26 bronze medals were won.
Over-all Webster's won all eight sections in the B League and finished second school over-all by some way.
Outstanding performances of the day came from Ella Peters, Stuart Reid and the S3 boys relay team.
Ella lined up in the first event of the day, the S1 girls 75m hurdles.
She came blistering out of the blocks to storm home to a gold medal and set the tone for the day.
Stuart, after an outstanding year last year, was out to further stamp his dominance on the S3 boys 1500 metre race.
Stuart led from the gun to the line and shattered the existing record by some 10 seconds and would have won the senior boys event by 11 seconds.
In the S3 boys relay the Webster's team set the track alight with a model performance, leaving the other schools in their wake and shattering a long standing school athletics record.
It was clear to see all the hard work put in by the athletes in the lead up to the competition, and this was definitely evident in their performances in the relay races where most teams pushed for first or second place all the way to the line.
A spokesperson for the school said: "It is fair to say all involved were a credit to themselves, their parents and the school.
"For a smaller school this was an outstanding effort and the P.E. staff look forward to working with all pupils again next year in an attempt to go one step better.
"From September the P.E. department will have an athletics club in place to help better prepare the athletes for future events such as the County Sports, Scottish Schools Indoor Championships and the Angus Schools Cross Country Championships.
"The aim of this club will be to promote physical fitness through athletics while providing the opportunity for more constructive coaching throughout the events and help build upon previous successes such as this."
