THE Tayside Basketball Primary Select squads had a clean sweep of trophies at the National Under 12 Inter Area tournament at Meadowmill Sports Centre in Tranent, East Lothian on Sunday.
Both the boys' squad and the girls' squad, comprising the best primary school basketball players in Angus and Dundee, were undefeated in all their games and returned to Tayside with both the boys' and girls' trophies displayed proudly at the front of
the team bus.

The girls' squad, which won the title last year for the first time, made it two in a row with convincing victories over hosts East Lothian and Glasgow before defeating Grampian 24 - 14 in the final round of a tense round robin competition.

The boys' squad also coasted to comfortable wins against Central, Grampian, West Lothian and Glasgow to set up an epic final game against an also undefeated East Lothian.

Exciting game

It was the best and most exciting game of the tournament, with the Tayside Boys eventually emerging winners by just two points in a 19 - 17 win and a first ever National Boys Championship.

Both squads had 11 players each, selected after extensive trials and selection process.

Angus and Dundee Primary schools supplied the players and the strength of each areas primary schools' basketball programme was reflected in the Tayside teams' dominance of the Inter Area Tournament.

Boys' coaches Steve Rose (Whitehills Primary School, Forfar) and Scott Finlayson (Forfar Basketball Club) were equally happy with the Boys' team performances.

After the competition on Sunday Coach Rose said: "We have had a couple of third places after narrow semi-final defeats, and I am happy to finally get Tayside hands on the Boys' trophy!

"I am particularly happy for the kids though, as they played the best basketball today and handled the physical side of things well too. I am very proud of all the players, and that they represented their own schools so well."

Girls' Squad Coach Robin Paterson, of Fintry Primary School in Dundee, was delighted with the victory. Coach Paterson said: "It was a great tournament today and all the girls played well. We have a few Primary 6 pupils in the team so I am looking forward to making it three in a row next year!"

The Tayside Boys won all five of their matches whilst the Tayside girls won all six of theirs, with neither team conceding a game.

Among the 11-strong boys' squad were Gavin Thomson and Gregory Rose, both primary seven pupils at Whitehills Primary in Forfar, along with P7 pupils from Arbroath, Carnoustie and Dundee.

The 11-strong girls' squad, led by head coach Robin Paterson and assistant coach Caitlyn Tadden-Paterson included Whitehills' primary seven pupils Iona Townsley and Murron White and Letham Primary seven pupils Eilidh Collins and Jennifer Greenhill.

Primary seven pupils from Arbroath and Dundee completed the girls' team.
