Public opinion is being sought on plans to relocate the Post Office facility in Kirriemuir from Reform Street to Thistle News and Gifts in the town centre.

A consultation process began last week and will end on November 4 with the new modernised service expected to begin in the new year.

News of the planned move was discussed at last week’s meeting of Kirriemuir Community Council.

Whilst members welcomed the continuation of Post Office services in town, others questioned the location of the proposed new site given traffic congestion in the town centre and its close proximity to the bus stop outside Age Concern.

It was agreed community councillor Cathy Stephenson would contact the owners of the newsagents to discuss what plans would be in place for the premises.

The change is part of a major programme of modernisation and investment taking place across the Post Office network.

Post Office services will be offered from two tills in the shop and there would be longer opening hours.

The majority of Post Office products and services will still be available, seven days a week.

Suzanne Richardson, Post Office Regional Network Manager, said: “We understand how important having a Post Office is to residents in Kirriemuir and we are confident this new modern Post Office service will meet the needs of the local community and secure services for the future.

“This modernisation is part of a major investment programme, the largest in the history of the Post Office and marks a commitment to no more branch closure programmes.”
