Classical music fans are in for a musical treat at this year’s Ruthven Music Festival, which this year takes place between Friday, June 12 and Sunday, June 14.
Staged in Ruthven Community Hall - the former church, halfway between Kirriemuir and Alyth - the first concert in the 26th festival’s expertly-selected programme is entitled ‘Baroque & Beyond’ and features music by Handel, Bach, Buxtehude, Corelli and Mendelssohn.
At the opening concert, Howard Duthie will conduct the Ruthven Festival Musicians, who will be joined on stage by Chansons, the Perth choir who are making a third appearance at the festival, and a new face at Ruthven, Rudolf Hillebrand.
Evelyn Hood, one of the annual festival’s organisers, said: “Rudolf is a highly-regarded singer of oratorio and we are delighted he is able to join us, especially as the June 12 concert features a Bach cantata and passages from Mendelssohn’s ‘Elijah’ which will be ideally suited for his magnificent voice.”
The June 14 concert will be conducted by Allan Young and will be a celebration of Scotland and Germany’s shared musical inheritance.
During this Sunday afternoon concert, Rudolf Hillebrand and Audrey Mattner will sing a selection of songs from their respective countries, while the Ruthven Festival Musicians will perform works by Mendelssohn, Haydn, Marie Dare, Darke and Bruch, as well as a selection of traditional Scottish tunes.
Continuing with the festival’s philosophy of showcasing talented young musicians, the concert will feature two teenage violinists from Perth Youth Orchestra will play Vivaldi’s Concerto in A minor.
Evelyn continued: “One of the longstanding aims of Ruthven Music Festival is to encourage local young musicians. “Our June 14 concert will provide these very talented young people with an opportunity to showcase their musical expertise – and also entertain an audience packed with people who are passionate about classical music and supporting up and coming musicians.”
Booking for the Ruthven Music Festival 2015 opens on May 3. Tickets are £20 for each concert (includes wine reception, Friday evening buffet/Sunday afternoon strawberries and cream), under-12s are welcome and will be free of charge.
