The Stag Coffee Shop in Forfar is the ideal venue for “ladies who lunch” and for those looking for a delicious lunch-time treat.
Its varied menu ensures there is something for everyone, be it a simple sandwich or something more adventurous from the daily specials board.
There is always a choice of soups - on Wednesday it was a hearty bowl of Cullen Skink or the exotic sounding carrot, coriander and coconut.
Also featured in the specials menu was The Stag vegi nachos at £5.75, or the very tempting sea salted tiger prawns at £6.50 - definitely one to look out for in future.
Also on the menu was barbecue chicken goujons and salad at £7.50
At lunch time my lady friends normally go for a sandwich or wrap.
On the day we opted for the chilli beef baked potato; a tuna, red onion and fresh milled black pepper mayonnaise wrap; a good-old faithful egg mayonnaise with chives sandwich and a coffee and home-made scone.
All the main dishes were served with crisps and a small salad garnish which has the most delicious dressing.
Not only does the food look delicious, it tastes delicious. There is just the right balance of garnish which, for a lunch-time snack, is ideal.
The chilli beef baked potato was described as “very tasty”, “not overly spicy for people who don’t like hot things.”
There was also a nice sprinkling of melted cheese on top to add to the combination of flavours. The tuna wrap was lovely and fresh, again not too heavy and beautifully presented, whilst the sandwich was on beautifully fresh, soft brown bread. You are spoiled for choice with the creative range of fillings for sandwiches, wraps, toasted focaccias or baked potatoes - my particular favourites are the Chinese chicken, mango chutney and fresh coriander and the oak smoked Shetland salmon and soft cream cheese - but then again you can’t go wrong with egg and chive.
We are regular customers at lunch times and there is plenty of free parking nearby - ideal for those nipping in during a lunch hour. There’s a lift up to the first floor coffee shop which is open Monday to Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. and on Sundays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
