With less than a month to go, Forfar Musical Society is busy rehearsing for its June show ‘Footsteps Around The World’.

The show, which will be performed in the Reid Hall, will be a celebration of the Commonwealth in a lead up to this year’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Society members will be following the route of the Queen’s Baton from India to Scotland representing many of the countries, such as India, Africa, Australia and of course Scotland, through dance, song and acting.

The Queen’s Baton Relay began in October in India and is travelling through 70 Nations and Territories of the Commonwealth.

In that time it will cover around 199,000 Kilometres over 288 days and will conclude with a tour throughout Scotland finishing in Glasgow.

Membershave also enlisted the services of several other local organisations to augment the programme.

A society spokesman said: “We are performing a wide and varied programme of entertainment from Bollywood/Bhangra dancing, a bit of Kylie, the Haka, a Lion King medley, a tribute to Nelson Mandela, African drumming, Scottish dancing and Forfar’s answer to Tom Jones, to a big Scottish finale with a Proclaimer favourite!

“There will be a number of other local groups joining us on stage to entertain. These include Phoenix Gymnastics, Kirkton Beat African Drumming, Langlands Primary School choir, Strathmore Rugby Club and local highland dancing schools.

“This is a completely different type of show for the society and with such a variety of performances and groups involved we are sure it won’t disappoint.”

The show is the culmination of a programme celebrating the Commonwealth Games coming to Scotland. In February the society received a grant of £10,000 from the Lottery’s ‘Celebrate’ scheme which was used to put on a number of free workshops.

These allowed members of the community to learn stories, songs and dances from throughout the Commonwealth and have formed the basis of the entertainment extravaganza which will be taking place in the heart of Forfar on three consecutive nights next month.

The Queen’s Baton itself will be travelling throughout Scotland from June 14 and will be coming through Forfar and Kirriemuir on June 28.

The show will run at the Reid Hall, Forfar from Thursday, June 12 to Saturday, June 14 at 7.30 p.m. Tickets are now available to buy in both The Toy Castle on Castle Street and Garlands on East High Street, Forfar, as well as online at
