Sibling rivalry at the Edinburgh Festival

The theme to Tom's piece is that he himself has performed on the fringe this year - but feels he has been completely overshadowed by his sister. And will have a bit of fun at her expense.

An Angus couple have celebrated having not one but two children performing at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe.

Journalist Tom Peterkin of our sister paper The Scotsman and his sister, Louise Leigh, wowed the crowds in two completely different acts - Tom performing as a soloist at the Royal Scottish Pipers’ Society’s concert, and Louise as a stand-up comedian.

In a tongue-in-cheek article for The Scotsman Tom wrote: “I’m not normally one for sibling rivalry, but it would be foolish not to acknowledge this unattractive trait has reared its ugly head.

“I admit a 12-minute piobaireachd with its mysterious variations and embellishments may be a trifle esoteric compared with the crash, bang, wallop of the comedy diva. Nevertheless I couldn’t help feeling a bit miffed by the attention lavished by my family on Louise’s stand-up career compared with their indifference to my piping. Artistic souls like me can be a little sensitive when it comes to things like that.”

Tom nobly admitted that his ‘little sis’ had “absolutely smashed it”.

Proud parents Bill, a retired Forfar GP, and Vicky were unable to attend either performance as they were on baby-sitting duty.

Vicky said: “We are basking in reflective glory. Sadly, we haven’t been able to see either of them as we have been looking after grandchildren but we are very thrilled that they are doing so well.”
