Royal Mail gets ready for Christmas

Around 530 Royal Mail postal staff supported by an extra 25 seasonal workers will be working round the clock to collect, sort and deliver Christmas cards, letters and parcels.

The Christmas operation will involve an additional 30 vehicles on top of the normal 332-strong transport fleet in the DD postcode area.

Postmen and women across the area will also use 70 bicycles as they go about their rounds. There are also 464 postboxes in Dundee and Angus to post Christmas cards.

Paul Kelly, Royal Mail Regional Operations Director for Scotland said: “This is the busiest time of year for Royal Mail in Dundee and Angus.

“Our postmen and women, as well as the extra seasonal staff we have taken on, will be working to collect, sort and deliver the Christmas mailbag to every community in the DD postcode area.

He added: “As we do every year, we encourage people to post early and order presents early to help us spread the workload of handling around two billion items in the run up to Christmas.”

To help Royal Mail at its busiest time of the year, customers are being encouraged to take a few simple steps.

1. Post early – to help Royal Mail spread the workload, post early and order presents early.

The last posting dates this Christmas are: December 17 for second Class mail; December 20 for first Class mail and December 22 for Special Delivery

2. Use a postcode – A clearly addressed card or parcel, with a postcode, helps Royal Mail sort the item more efficiently.

3. Use Special Delivery for valuable packages and parcels, Royal Mail’s Special Delivery service is recommended, this means your gift is tracked, traced and insured against loss.

4. Use Parcelforce Worldwide’s Express services to ensure fast international delivery across the world from next working day, and the Scheduled service from three working days.
