A Forfar man has been recognised for his bravery in defusing a dangerous incident involving an armed prisoner at Perth Prison.

David Patullo (57), along with fellow residential officer Alistair Callum, was presented with one of the highest wards in the prison service - the Chief Executive Meritorious Award.

The award recognises extraordinary acts of bravery by Scottish Prison Service staff under incredibly difficult and pressured circumstances.

The officers were recognised for their bravery in defusing a dangerous incident involving an armed prisoner.

They were responsible for resolving a highly-charged incident which developed between prisoners during a period of “open association” within a prison hall in August last year.

One of the prisoners was in possession of a weapon and the officers’ quick intervention, without concern for their own safety, brought the incident to a safe and speedy conclusion.

Their quick and decisive actions earned them both a nomination for the Chief Executive Meritorious Award, which are only awarded in exceptional circumstances.

The awards were presented at a ceremony in Perth Prison last month by Colin McConnell, chief executive of the SPS.

He thanked them individually for their contribution to the service.

Mr McConnell said: “Both Alistair and David showed bravery and resilience throughout the incident, and managed to ensure that this difficult situation did not escalate further or result in serious injury to the prisoners involved.”

Perth prison governor Mike Inglis added: “The certificates were presented to two of my staff who intervened during a serious incident professionally and allowed the incident to end with a positive outcome.”

David joined the Scottish Prison Service six years ago after 23 years at Angus County Press, latterly working as production manager.

He said: “I was just doing my job. We reacted to a situation, saw how it developed and re-acted in a way that no staff members were hurt.”
