Kirriemuir’s Relay for Life committee is holding its first fund-raising event this month, in the build-up to one of the biggest events on the town’s calendar.
Supporters of the event, which raises funds for Cancer Research UK, can dance away the January blues at a disco which will be held in the town hall on Saturday, January 31.
The unique community event brings together people of all ages, backgrounds and fitness levels, with the common cause of raising money and awareness for the charity.
Taking place this year on August 15 and 16, the relay involves teams of between eight and 15 people who take it in turns to walk round a track for 24 hours while everyone else enjoys a wide range of fun activities. As Relay For Life is non-stop through the night, those team members not on the track take turns to rest, eat, or sleep in their tents, which are set up close by. Once teams are formed, they fund-raise until the main event.
The volunteer committee is inviting all existing and prospective team captains along to a team captain’s meeting at Kirriemuir Golf Club this Sunday, January 18, starting at 7pm, where they can ask questions and find out more from people who have taken part before.
Rhona Guild, secretary, said: “With music, games, entertainment, food, fund-raising and perhaps a few surprises going on, team members take turns to walk around a track on the Kirrie Show field for 24 hours.
“When not walking, you can enjoy a bite to eat, chat with old and new friends, maybe pop home for a few hours sleep or best of all, just relax with others in your nearby tent, soaking up the amazing atmosphere of the whole event!”
Tickets for the disco cost £10, including a light supper, and area available in advance only by contacting Rhona Guild on 07971 454626
