Kirriemuir community group DD8 Music has been very busy in recent months, with lots of exciting projects on the go.
The year-long BIG Music project, carried out in collaboration with Youth Scotland and UK Youth, came to an end with a fantastic closing ceremony at the O2 Arena in London at the end of February.
DD8 Music Champions Philip Ironside and Katie Reid made the trip down, along with hundreds of other young people from around the UK.
There were live performances and presentations about all the amazing projects that these dedicated young people had been carrying out all over the country.
DD8 Music has also been fortunate this year to receive funding from the ‘Young Start’ scheme, which has allowed them to employ a full time development worker for the next two years.
Former chairman Graham Galloway took on the position at the start of March and is looking at growing the group and the services it offers the young people of Kirriemuir.
Graham said: “We are keen to work with as many different community groups as possible, and I would like to invite anyone to pop by the studio for a look at our facilities and a chat about what we can offer other groups in the town.”
DD8 also has a packed schedule of events coming up over the year. Bonfest (see story on page 8) on Friday and Saturday, May 1 and 2, and DD8’s annual free festival ‘Live in the Den’ is scheduled for June 27.
DD8 Music will also be helping out at the Relay for Life, The Kirriemuir Festival, and a variety of other community events throughout the year.
Any other community groups looking for assistance with live music or equipment for events should get in touch.
DD8 Music continues its weekly free music drop-in sessions in their studio on Bellies Brae in Kirriemuir. These are open to any young budding musicians in the town, whatever their level of ability, and run on Fridays from 7 to 9 p.m. and Sundays from 4 to 7 p.m. The studio is also available for anyone to hire for either rehearsal or recording purposes.
