Local butchers James Pirie & Son of Newtyle have won a Gold Award for their Spicy Lamb Sparklers and Silver Awards for pork and caramelised red onion Katherine Wheels and a spicy pork and pumpkin cauldron.

The awards were set up to stimulate butchers into making products with a Hallowe’en and Bonfire Night theme. Craft butchers were challenged to get their thinking caps on and create something that would capture their customers’ imagination.

Pirie’s tricks proved to be a real treat when they came before the judges at the product evaluation event held at Dunfermline Athletic Football Club in August.

Alan Pirie received his awards in Perth last Wednesday from John Gallagher of the event sponsors McDonnells (Queen Street) Ltd., Dublin, Ireland.

John said: “It was really good to see all the scary products and lots of great product ideas came forward. I think we can look forward to seeing some real innovation in butchers shops this Halloween and Bonfire Night.

“Ogre’s eyes in swamp sauce was the best product in the Hallowe’en category and Catherine Wheels – sausages on sticks – was the best Bonfire Night product. The recipe for these products has been circulated to all Scottish Craft butchers and promotional posters made so these will be promoted by butchers throughout the country.”
