More needs to be done about care funding

A SCOTTISH care home provider has welcomed the government’s care funding proposal but has warned that more needs to be done.

Dr Chai Patel, Chairman of HC-One, has welcomed Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt’s announcement on the long term changes to social care funding where he introduced that the maximum amount an individual will have to pay for elderly care will be capped at £75,000.

Speaking about the changes to social care, Dr Patel said: “There has been a long wait for the Government to respond to the Dilnot Commission so this announcement is an important step in the right direction. The £75,000 cap does provide a degree of certainty, enabling individuals to plan for their care later in life. Our concern remains that a cap at the £75,000 mark is still very high and furthermore this arrangement doesn’t in itself increase the much needed funding to provide adequate social care for the increasingly frail elderly people in our society.”
