THE latest local event in a packed programme for the summer season is the annual Forfar Gala Week.
The event, put together by Forfar and Area Partnership, working alongside a variety of local groups and organisations, gets underway this Sunday and ends with the gala day itself on Sunday, June 24.
“Year on year the Forfar and Area Partnership brings together the people of Angus to celebrate the Gala Week and 2012 proves to be better than ever,” says Fiona McCash, partnership chairperson.
“We look forward to a week of local craft stalls, music, dance and demonstrations which, we hope, will excite and amuse. There will be something for everyone on gala day, whether you are eight or eighty.”
Mark Guild, of Guild Homes (Tayside) Limited, main sponsors of the gala week, adds: “We, along with a great many other local companies, are proud to play our part in the local community and support Forfar Gala Week.
“The week is about the community, it is for the community and it provides an excellent opportunity for local businesses to give something back to the local people who contribute to our success.”
The gala week begins this Sunday with Music in the Myre Green, so fingers will be crossed for some dry, sunny weather!
The event, running from 1 pm to 4.30 pm, is being run in conjunction with DD8 Music and will feature bands such as Sonnet 65, Lay By Party and Just Katie.
In the evening, the East & Old Parish Church in Forfar will play host to “Sing Forfar’s Praises”, from 7 pm.
On Saturday, June 23, starting at 10 am., there will be a charity family fun run around Forfar Loch. The entry fee is £5 with all proceeds going to the Scoliosis Association UK.
There will be medals for all runners.
There are also a number of activities planned for the Myre green on the Saturday afternoon.
A dog show will get underway from 1 pm, with registration from 12 noon, while the Rotary Club of Forfar is staging a car boot sale. In addition there will be a display of classic motorbikes and cars.
The main gala day programme for Sunday, June 24 will see events getting underway from 12 noon. Main ring entertainment will be provided by Forfar and District Pipe Band, the Liz Low Highland Dancers and the Celtic rock band Gleadraich, while there will be TaeKwon-Do, kick-boxing and fire and rescue demonstrations.
In addition, there will be a tug o’ war competition and a balloon race, while surrounding the main ring there will be a variety of stalls for people to visit and support.
The nearby Guide Hall will play host to a FairTrade fashion show, while an outdoor service close to Forfar Lochside Leisure Centre is planned by Forfar Action for Churches Together at 4.30 pm.
Throughout the week a photo competition is being run, sponsored by Forfar Accordion and Fiddle Club.
Full details are contained in the already circulating Forfar Gala Week 2012 programme.
Entries require to be submitted to Forfar Library by Friday, June 22 or handed in to the Gala Day Tent in the Myre green on Sunday, June 24.
