Kirriemuir’s annual Splash relay swim has achieved a historic milestone - its 25th anniversary.
This year’s event - scheduled for the afternoon of September 27 at Kirriemuir Leisure Centre - is likely to make even bigger fund-raising waves than ever before.
Besides welcoming new entrants from the Tayside community, schools, swimming clubs and local companies, Splash organisers have issued a unique challenge to their supporters from yesteryear.
A spokesman said: “At recent swims many spectators have recalled their happy memories of early Splash events. Now they are proudly supporting their own youngsters in our fun event. We wonder if any are brave enough to take the plunge again for the 2014 swim. Our picture shows some entrants for our 1990 event, and we have lots of other vintage photographs to come in the weeks ahead. Maybe you can spot yourself and accept our challenge to swim this year - cheered on by the new generation?
“2014 will see total Splash donations to Scottish and worldwide charities exceed £180,000. We would like this historic anniversary to be a very special celebration of the annual swim - now one of Tayside’s longest running and financially successful fund-raisers. Splash has benefited hugely from the continued generosity and enthusiasm of the people of Angus and supportive local firms. In recent years their combined donations have achieved an amazing annual target of £10,000.”
Entry forms from firstname.lastname@example.org or phone 01575 572129. Teams of six to eight swimmers can be of any mix from age six years.
Splash is organised by a committee of eight volunteers representing Kirriemuir St Andrew’s, St Anthony’s, St Mary’s and Glens and Old Parish Churches and is loyally supported by more than 30 commercial sponsors and Kirriemuir Rotary Club.
