A Forfar man who set out to raise £1,000 for local charity Lippen Care by organising a golf tournament has realised more than three times his target.
Stewart Davidson arranged the event in memory of his late wife, Lorna, and to raise money for Lippen Care which runs the Strathmore Hospice at Whitehills Health and Community Care Centre.
But the tournament, which attracted more than 70 entrants from as wide a field as Dundee and Aberdeenshire, and was held recently at Brechin Golf Club, eventually raised £3,500.
It also included an auction and golfers’ raffle which, together with the tournament entries, proved to be so popular that Stewart had exceeded his £1,000 target before the competition was held.
Stewart lost Lorna last year to pancreatic cancer and he was keen to do something for Lippen Care to thank the charity for the care his wife received while she was in Strathmore Hospice. He presented the cheque recently to John Symington and Moira Nicol from the charity.
He also put up a trophy, the Lorna Davidson Memorial Cup, which he hoped could go on to become an annual fixture. Stewart this week said he was delighted with the “fantastic” total and that further fund-raisers are being planned.
He said: “We have another charity event in the pipeline and we are just waiting on news of this event and when it will be, so watch this space.
“When the last news about this charity was in the Dispatch people stopped me in the street to say what a wonderful thing I was doing. Two ladies put £10 notes into my hand and told me to put this towards the fund. One of my neighbours gave me a cheque for £30 in memory of Lorna. How kind some people are.
“I really did not think I could have raised this sum but we did it and we will not stop as we have booked Brechin Golf Club for next year and while I do not envisage such a large event, we do hope to raise a considerable sum. We have a trophy sponsored by Strathmore Funeral Directors and we have to keep this tournament going.”
“I would not bet against other people doing something to raise funds for Lippen Care as they were very impressed with Moira Nicol when she gave them an insight into the charity.
