A Kirriemuir Community Councillor has put forward a suggestion for a change of use of a town centre hotel which is currently on the market.

Speaking at last month’s meeting, Alan Bell suggested the former Hook’s Hotel could be turned into a community facility which could further strengthen links between Kirriemuir and its twin town of Volvic in France.

Mr Bell has tried for several months to re-ignite interest in the once flourishing twinning arrangement but, to date, he has been unsuccessful in gathering much support locally.

However, those in France, and in particular young students at the local secondary school, are extremely enthusiastic about re-forging links with the Little Red Town.

At Wednesday’s meeting Mr Bell said: “It has been extremely quiet on the twinning front so I have decided to change tack.

“I was wondering what the chances were of taking over the Hook’s Hotel as a community project. The building is in the town centre and as well as a community centre it could have an exhibition area as well as a study area, with accommodation for students.

“If we put it right we could claim European grants - it is just an idea.

“At the moment Hook’s Hotel is lying empty. It is a desolate site in the centre of the town and it is now for sale. We also have the Airlie Arms Hotel in the town centre which is lying empty but that would be a huge project.”

At the previous month’s meeting Mr Bell reported Volvic High School has written to the Rector of Webster’s High School asking if they can include Webster’s in their European studies.

The pupils at Webster’s have started a pen-friend programme with the Volvic High School and it is hoped this may encourage the parents to also get involved. Mr Bell is currently in contact with the new Volvic Council to establish a way forward.
