Your chance to volunteer

CHEST Heart and Stroke Scotland is appealing for volunteers to help with its services in Angus. CHSS’s Community Services provide communication support services to 1,200 people throughout Scotland.

Local coordinator Jill Thain explains: “Our Community Services in North & Mid Angus support people who have had a stroke, helping them with communication difficulties and offering support and social activities.

“The service depends entirely on the help of local volunteers and all that’s needed is a willingness to help others. Full training is given and expenses reimbursed.

“Our services are tailored to the needs of the individual but generally involve chatting over a cup of tea in one-to-one or group settings.

“Volunteers are trained for their role in conversation to ensure that the service member can fully contribute despite their communication difficulties.

“One-to-one conversation support may involve supporting a patient on the stroke ward, at home or accompanying the service member when they first access shops or social activities - helping them build confidence and regain independence.

“Volunteers can also support members accessing these services by accompanying them on public transport or by driving them to and from a group.

“If you could spare a few hours to help, not necessarily every week but on a regular basis, we’d love to welcome you to the volunteer team.”
