FORFAR man Bill Sim popped into our office last week after noticing the Union Jack did not fly over the town and county hall to mark the Queen’s diamond jubilee.

He had noticed the Union Jack was flown when Prince Charles took the Royal Salute during the Black Watch’s Home-Coming Parade in April, so was curious to find out why it was not hoisted to mark the jubilee, but rather the saltire continued to be flown in the town centre.

He said: “When Charles was here they changed the flag. Why did they not do that for the Queen?” A spokesperson for Angus Council said: “The Saltire is normally lowered at Town and County Buildings, Forfar and the Union flag raised, on a number of occasions including the birthdays of members of the Royal family; the anniversary of the Queen’s coronation and the anniversary of her accession to the throne, February 6. In Angus, as elsewhere, the Queen’s diamond jubilee was marked with the lighting of beacons and other celebrations.”
