WEBSTER'S PUPIL BAGS TOP COMPETITION PRIZE
A TALENTED pupil from Webster's High School has been crowned winner of a unique design competition in aid of leading youth charity The Prince's Trust Scotland and backed by leading global consultancy, Capgemini.
David Elder's design was made into an eco-goodie bag and unveiled in front of guests at the Capgemini Black and White Ball on May 1, at the Glasgow Hilton Hotel.
The ball was Glasgow's first carbon neutral event, aimed at increasing awareness of the urgent need for environmental change while raising vital funds for The Prince's Trust Scotland.
As a finalist in the competition, David (14) was invited to the Ball as a VIP guest where he was presented with the winning prize of a wind turbine for the school, generously donated by Windsave.
Scottish celebrity, Carol Smillie, had the task of choosing the winner from the three impressive designs that made it into the final. The other two finalists were Kerry Channing, a pupil at Hollybrook School in Glasgow and Nathan Skene, a pupil at Oldmachar Academy in Aberdeen.
David is part of a programme at Webster's High that is devised by The Prince's Trust Scotland, entitled 'xlerate with xl'. The xlerate with xl programme is targeted at young people aged 14 to 16 in S3 and S4, and actively encourages young people to make the most of their remaining time at school.
It does this by boosting their motivation and developing skills for the world of work, and ultimately encourages them to move into education, employment and training upon leaving school. Over 92% of those participating in this programme move into employment, education or training.
Geraldine Gammell, director of The Prince's Trust Scotland, said: "This year's Capgemini Black and White Ball was a fantastic evening with a key environmental message at its heart.
"The standard of entries in the goodie-bag design competition was extremely high and I would like to congratulate David on creating a clever and eye-catching design."
Amy Sieweke, chair of the Capgemini Prince's Trust Committee (Scotland) said: "Capgemini is delighted to be able to support The Prince's Trust.
"The Black and White Ball offered a unique opportunity for us to ensure young people were at the heart of the event - and creating a competition for pupils to design the eco-goodie bag was just one way of doing that. The designs were all fantastic and guests were very impressed when they received their bags on Friday night."
The Prince's Trust Scotland has helped more than 60,000 young people gain skills and find work since 1976, and continues to support 100 more young people every day across the UK. The Trust works with 14 to 25 year olds who have struggled at school, have been in care, are long-term unemployed or have been in trouble with the law.
