Watch out for bogus callers

Tayside Police advise members of the public to be on their guard in relation to sharing personal banking information over the phone.

Recently, a 53-year old woman received a telephone call from a woman with a Scottish accent claiming to be from her bank advising money had gone missing from her account.

The victim was given a telephone number to call and told to transfer her savings into another account. The woman attended at her bank and was advised that this was not indeed the case.

Fraudsters will use personal information about people to convince them they are officials from your bank, before encouraging them to part with further details, including a bank PIN number.

Everyone should be on their guard. Banks, or the police for that matter, will not cold call or email anyone to request information such as login details, cards or PIN numbers. Should anyone receive such a call they should hang up (or in the case of an email – not respond) and contact the police.

Many people have been taken in by these scams, and some have lost their entire life savings. Don’t be one of them.

Never give out personal details over the phone, always ask for more information, be sure you know who you’re talking to and keep your bank account details safe.

Action Fraud provides a great deal of advice in relation to all types of fraud and advice about how to avoid becoming a victim of fraud. For further information see – www.actionfraud.org.uk
