TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE FOR FORMER FORFAR PUPIL

A MEMBER of a former Forfar family who are holding a family gathering in the town later this month has contacted the "Dispatch" and "Herald" from Oxford to provide readers with a special trip down memory lane.

Readers may recall the reunion plans for the Aitken family which is taking place at the Queen's Hotel on July 31. Bill Aitken has managed to unearth an old school photograph that may jog the memory of his former school friends.

Bill said: "This school photo is of class IV, Forfar North School, taken in 1954, my class.

"I have the names of all my classmates written on the back, including the school teacher, Miss Easson."

Bill, who left Forfar just a year after this photograph was taken, has provided the following Christian names and surnames of the children pictured in the school photograph, although the writing on the back of the picture stated only first initials with surnames. He said he would put money on many of the names he could remember but for some he was not so confident.

Pictured from left are:- (back) James Kerr, Billy Ritchie, Eric Birse, Stuart Michie, Brian Stephen, Alec Cowie, Bobby Sherriff, Robert Beattie; (middle) James Ross, Margaret Carcary, Marion Shepherd, Katherine Rae, Nancy Rennet, Barbara Findlay, Sandy Gourlay; (front) Jean Christie, Margaret Milne, Linda Robertson, Norma Bell, Eleanor Robbie, Isobel Millar, K. Mackie, Rita Nixon, Irene Scott; (seated front) Robert Bruce, Harold Grant, Michael Kelly and Bill Aitken.

Bill said: "If any of those in my class remember me perhaps they could drop me a line on my email address (bill.aitken@rocketmail.com), and, if they wish, they would be very welcome to call by and join us for a chat and a drink at the Queen's Hotel on July 31 between 2pm and 6pm."

Forfar was home to the Aitken family from 1942 to 1955 when they lived in Carseburn Road before moving to the Brechin Road for four years.

Bill's brother Ian attended the Queen Victoria boarding school in Dunblane and their sister Joan attended Forfar Academy. Ian can also be contacted by email at miaitken@aol.com or call 01525 385835.
