THE DAY THE KIRK GRIFFIN CAME DOWN TO EARTH

THE people of Forfar have been fascinated during the past week by the renovation works being carried out on one of the town's most prominent landmarks.

The East and Old Parish Church has had up to four tiers of scaffolding surrounding the top of its steeple and, as part of a 22,500 project to repair the deterioration of extensive areas of stonework, on-lookers watched with interest as the griffin was lowered by workmen of Rosewell-based Pendrich Height Services just before noon on Friday.

The griffin was being taken down so that it can be given a revamp and be completely re-guilded.

Urgent work on the town's steeple began last March when steeplejacks carried out a regular inspection of the stonework. However, their inspection revealed the deterioration that prompted Forfar's four councillors to agree to fund the repairs from the Forfar Common Good Fund.
